Abstinence

Term for abstinence (lat. abstinere = to abstain). The term is often associated with abstaining from alcohol or meat dishes or also with sexual abstinence. Especially "abstainer" colloquially refers to a person who lives abstinently with regard to alcohol. In connection with excessive alcohol consumption, the temperance movements (abstinence) arose in the 19th century. See on the complex of topics under alcohol consumption.
