The red grape variety comes from Italy. Synonyms are Aglianico, Aglianico Bastardo, Aglianico del Vulture, Aglianicone Nero, Glianicone and Ruopolo. The earlier assumption that it is identical to the Ciliegiolo variety has been proven wrong by DNA analyses carried out in 2002. It is also not a mutation of Aglianico, but there is a close relationship with this variety. It is cultivated in the regions of Basilicata and Campania (authorised in the DOC wine Castel San Lorenzo). In 2016, 30 hectares of vineyard area have been identified, with a strong downward trend (statistics Kym Anderson).

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
