Água Santa

The red grape variety (breeding number H-8-48-22) is a new cross between Mortágua (Camarate Tinto) x João de Santarém (Castelão Francês), which was confirmed by DNA analyses carried out most recently in 2020. The cross was made in Portugal in 1948 by the breeder José Leão Ferreira da Almeida. The medium-late ripening vine is susceptible to powdery mildew. It produces red wines rich in tannin and alcohol. The variety is mainly cultivated in the DOC area of Bairrada in the northwest of the country. In 2016, 76 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
