Aguardente

Portuguese term (Engl. "burning water") for spirits with an alcohol content of 40 to 45% vol. In the Lisboa area there is the Aguardente DOC area Lourinhã. These are obtained by distillation from wine, grain, fruits or seeds, for example aniseed, grapes or cherries. A variant of the Brazilian sugar cane spirit Cachaça is also called Aguardente. In Colombia, aguardiente is a spirit made from aniseed and sugar cane with 29% alcohol by volume. In Spain, the designation for spirits is Aguardiente.
