Spanish term (agua = water, ardiente = burning, burning water) for spirits between 40 and 45% alcohol by volume. These can be brandies made from different basic materials such as grain, fruit, seeds or wine. The best quality brandies come from the Sherry region and are then called Brandy de Jerez according to their origin. The Portuguese name for spirits is Aguardente.
