The white grape variety comes from Spain. Synonyms are Agodenho, Agudelha, Agudelho, Agudenho, Gouveio as the second main name, Verdelho, Verdelho Branco, Verdelho do Dão ( Portugal ); Agodello, Berdello, Godelho, Godella, Godenho, Ojo de Gallo, Prieto Picudo Blanco, Trincadente ( Spain ); as well as a number of other names that confusingly refer to the varieties listed below. The old variety most likely comes from the banks of the Río Sil in Galicia, in northwestern Spain. It was first mentioned in 1531 by the ampelographer Rui Fernandes under Agudelho and Trincadente in Douro, Portugal.
