Albalonga

The white grape variety (also Würzburg B-51-2-1) is a new breeding between Rieslaner x Müller-Thurgau. The name is derived from the Latin for alba (white) and longa (long). The "Weiße Lange" has a relatively bright foliage and strikingly slender and elongated grapes. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2012, the paternity of the Silvaner stated in the breeding list has been proven to be wrong. The cross was made by the breeder Dr. Hans Breider (1908-2000) in 1951 at the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture in Würzburg (Franconia). By the way, the two new breeds Fontanara and Montagna were created with the same parents. The plant variety protection was granted in 1971. This late-maturing, high-yielding vine produces acidic white wines with aromas of exotic fruits and floral notes. In 2018, it will only occupy 12 hectares of vineyards in Germany, mainly in the Franconian, Rheinhessen and Palatinate growing regions, with a sharp downward trend. There are also small stocks in England.
