The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Albarenzeuli Nero, Albarenzelin Nero and Uva Melone. According to one hypothesis, it was introduced to Sardinia from the Iberian Peninsula during the Spanish occupation from 1323 to 1720. A relationship to the white variety Albaranzeuli Bianco is suspected. In the VIVC catalogue, Albaranzeuli Nero is only given as a synonym for the Molinera variety. The late-ripening vine yields red wines that are weak in colour, low in alcohol and low in acidity. It is cultivated in the province of Nuoro. In 2016, 28 hectares of vines were reported with a falling trend (Kym Anderson).
