Albarín Blanco

The white grape variety comes from Spain. Synonyms are Alvarin Blanco, Albarin Bianco, Blanca del País, Blanca Lexitima, Blanco Legítimo, Blanco Lexitimo, Blanco País, Blanco Verdín, Branca do País, Branco Legitimo, Branco Lexítimo, Raposo and Tinta Fina. Although it may appear to be synonymous or similar, it should not be confused with the varieties Albillo Real, Alfrocheiro (Albarín Negro), Alvarinho, Elbling and Gouais Blanc (both also Blanco Verdín) and Savagnin Blanc (grown in Spain and Australia under the names Albariño and Albarín Blanco). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it is the result of a presumably natural cross between Savagnin Blanc(traminer) x unknown variety. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The early ripening vine is resistant to downy mildew. It produces spicy, acidic white wines with a flowery aroma. The variety is grown in the Asturias region. In 2016, 48 hectares of vineyards were registered (Kym Anderson).
