Alcañón

The white grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Alcañón Blanco, Alcanou, Alfonsarro, Blanco Castellano, Bobal Blanca, Cansera, Carrega Somera, Carregasomiers, Castelo Branco, Jaén, Mantuo Castellano, Mantuo de Jerez, Mantuo de Sanlucar, Mantuo de Xerez, Mantúo Vigiriego, Palote, Pansales, Panse, Pansera and Panses. With reference to the synonym Bobal Blanca, it is not a mutation of the red Bobal variety. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2018, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Hebén x unknown partner. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The vine produces white wines full of character. It is cultivated in the DO area of Somontano, among others. In 2016, 27 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
