Département in the southeast of France with the capital Digne-les-Bains in the political region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It borders the departments of Alpes Maritimes (east), Var (south), Vaucluse (west), Drôme (northwest) and Hautes-Alpes (north), as well as Italy (northeast). The wine-growing areas are part of the Provence wine-growing region. The country wine or IGP area covering the entire département is also called Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. There are no local IGP areas. The département is also part of the large regional IGP area Méditerranée.
80% of the wines produced are red, 15% rosé and 5% white. The bulk comes from the Durance valley in the east. The main red wine varieties are Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Cinsaut,Syrah, Carignan Noir (Mazuelo), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The most important white wine varieties are Ugni Blanc (Trebbiano Toscano), Clairette, Chardonnay and Muscat Blanc. Well-known producers are Cave la Madeleine and Domaine de Régusse.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
