Americano

Common name in Switzerland (also Uva Americano), for the American vines planted after the phylloxera disaster, such as Clinton, Isabella, Noah and many Seibel vines. However, due to their intrusive strawberry aroma or foxtone, they are used almost exclusively as table grapes, for grape juice and for the production of grappa. In the Swiss canton of Ticino, it is also understood to mean a simple, acidic and low-alcohol red wine. Such wines are also marketed as "strawberries" and in Italy as Fragolino. However, they are not allowed to be called quality wine and are partly produced for home consumption only. A similar Austrian speciality made from American vines is the Burgenland Uhudler.
