Appellation (also Amyndeo or Amyntaion) in the east of the Florina district in the Greek region of Macedonia. It is named after the town of the same name. It is the northernmost wine-growing area in Greece. The vineyards, with their characteristic sandy soil, cover about 750 hectares of vines in an area 40 kilometres long and 5 to 20 kilometres wide, at an altitude of 570 to 750 metres above sea level. About 50% are located between the Petres and Vegoritida lakes. The many water bodies or lakes in the region play an important role in the microclimate, which is particularly favourable for viticulture.
The POP area Amynteo applies to red wine and, as an exclusive novelty for Greece, also to rosé wine and rosé sparkling wine. All varieties are made from the only authorised variety, Xinomavro (here also called Mavro Naoussis). They are produced dry, semi-dry and "lieblich" matured. Well-known producers are Alpha Estate, Amynteon Cooperative Winery, Hatzis, Kir Yianni and Pavlou Winery.
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
