Characteristically smelling, colourless, flammable liquid. Since anisole can be formally understood as an ether (organic compound) of methanol and phenol, it is also called methylphenyl ether or methoxybenzene. Anisole is used as a solvent, heat transfer agent and starting material for the synthesis of organic compounds such as pharmaceuticals and fragrances. A chemical compound with chlorine is trichloroanisole (TCA), which causes the dreaded wine defect cork taint. Other chemical compounds are tribromoanisole (TBA), which causes a similar blemish, and tetrachloroanisole (TeCA), used in wood preservatives.
