The regional appellation in the western section of the wine-growing region Loire or on the left bank of this river comprises around 220 communities around the city of Angers. The former VDQS area Vins du Thouarsais was integrated in 2011. Red, rosé, white and sparkling wines are produced here under many AOC names. The wines from here were valued in the Middle Ages, but white wines dominated at that time. The vineyards cover around 12,000 hectares of vineyards. The much smaller appellation Saumur lies in the east, whose very similar wines can also be marketed as Anjou (but not vice versa).
Around half of the production is dominated by dry to sweet and young to drink Rosé, These are mainly made under AOC Rosé d'Anjou (or Anjou Rosé) Grolleau Noir (here Groslot) with shares of Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon. Pineau d'Aunis. Gamay and Malbec ( Cot ) blended. Another rosé is produced under AOC Cabernet d'Anjou from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
AOC Anjou produces red and white wines as well as rose wines. The white wines are made Chenin Blanc (at least 80%), Chardonnay (maximum 20%) and Sauvignon Blanc blended. The red wines are made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pineau d'Aunis. Another red wine from Gamay is created under AOC Anjou Gamay . A rarely used AOC is Anjou Coteaux de la Loire west of the city of Angers, which applies to Chenin Blanc white wines. Red wines from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are produced under the AOC Anjou-Villages . The municipality of Brissac with a further nine surrounding municipalities was taken out in 1986 and its own AOC Anjou-Villages-Brissac was created.
Sparkling and sparkling wines in white and rosé are produced under the AOC names Anjou Mousseux and Anjou Pétillant . The white ones from the varieties Chenin Blanc (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Gamay, Grolleau and Pineau d'Aunis, as well as the rose-colored ones from the same varieties except Chenin Blanc.
