Antão Vaz

The white grape variety (also Antonio Vaz) originates from Portugal. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it originated from a presumably natural cross between Cayetana Blanca x João Domingos. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The medium-maturing vine is generally well resistant to vine diseases and drought. It produces fresh white wines with a balanced alcohol-acid content and tropical fruit aromas. The variety is mostly used as a blend, especially in the Alentejo, Lisboa and Península de Setúbal areas. The area under cultivation in 2016 was 1,768 hectares with a strong upward trend (Kym Anderson).
