Anwander

Old designation in use in the German-speaking area (also Anherwander, Anwandung) for the border or the front side or the line at the front side of a vineyard, crosswise to the other lines. Vines standing there were called Anwanderstöcke. But often this was also an unplanted strip on both sides of the border of neighbouring vineyards where a path was missing. In most cases this was also connected with the so-called plough-turning right. Boundary stones were called Anwande(r)steinen, an alley (path) between two vineyards was called Anwalle or Anweld(e).
