The French oenologist Prof. Dr. Denis Boubals (1926-2007) is one of the most important personalities of the 20th century in viticulture. After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of Montpellier, graduated in oenology and agronomy in 1948 and obtained his doctorate in natural sciences in 1958 with a thesis on the genetic transmission of phylloxera resistance. Boubals first worked at the INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique) as the responsible director of the research department. In 1975 he got a chair for viticulture at the university department "École Nationale Supérieur Agronomique" in Montpellier.
