One of about 30 American species or wild vines with the complete botanical name Vitis arizonica Engelm, first described around 1868. The German-American botanist Georg Engelmann (1809-1884) was honoured in its name. Trivial synonyms are Arizona Grape, Canyon Grape and Dawny Canyon Grape. The assumption that this is a natural hybrid has not been confirmed.
