The former rural wine area (VdlT) in the Spanish region Castile and Leon
was classified as DO in 2007. From a geological point of view, it is very similar to the port area beyond Douro
, The area coincides with the boundaries of the nature park of the same name. The vineyards cover 750 hectares of vineyards in the two provinces of Salamanca and Zamora. Licensed are the red varieties Juan García, Rufete, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mencia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Syrah, and the white varieties Malvasia, Verdejo, Albillo and Puesta en Cruz (Rabigato). The grapes of more than 600 winemakers with often small areas are processed by only about 15 wineries.
