The white grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Asprathiri, Asprathiro, Asprothiri, Asprothiro, Athiri, Athiri Lefko, Athiri Leyko and Athyri. The name recalls its possible origin from the archipelago of Santorini with the main island of Thira.
