Assmannshausen

The wine-growing community in Hesse is a district of Rüdesheim am Rhein and belongs to the German wine-growing region Rheingau. It is bordered by the Rhine in the west and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Upper Middle Rhine Valley". More than 90% of the vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir, the rest with other red wine varieties and some Riesling. For this reason, "Assmannshäuser" was also a common synonym for Pinot Noir in the past. This makes Assmannhausen probably the best-known red wine community in Germany in this region otherwise dominated by Riesling. The three individual vineyards Frankenthal, Hinterkirch and Höllenberg are combined in the Großlage Steil and cover a total of 70 hectares of vineyards on heat-retaining phyllite slate. The water-permeable soil and the microclimate are almost ideally suited for Pinot Noir. In addition to red wines, many white Pinot Noirs are traditionally pressed here. Well-known producers are Hessische Staatsweingüter (Domäne Assmannshausen), Kesseler, König Robert and Krone.
