Athos

Athos - Kloster Zografou und Simonos Petras

The "Holy Mount Athos" (Greek: Ágion Óros, English: Mount Athos) is an orthodox monastic republic with autonomous status under Greek sovereignty in Greece. It is located on the eastern finger of the same name on the peninsula of Chalkidikí in the centre of the region of Macedonia. At the Holy Mountain there are a total of 20 large monasteries, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. On the slopes, there is also viticulture, the PGE wines (Topikos Oinos = country wines) produced here are marketed with the origin Agioritikos (see there the producers).
