ATP

Abbreviation for adenosine triphosphate - the universal form of stored and rapidly releasable energy in living cells and at the same time an important regulator for biochemical processes requiring energy. The energy-rich compound is made up of the base adenine (part of the genetic code in DNA and RNA), the sugar ribose and three phosphate residues. Adenosine is the name of the compound of adenine with ribose. The cleavage of ATP into ADP releases energy that catalyses biochemical processes in organisms. The reverse reaction leads to the chemical storage of energy. This plays an important role in fermentation. See also under Bioenergetic Viticulture.
