Attractants

Hormone-like substances (also exohormones, telergones) which, unlike hormones, do not act in the body in the form of odourants or attractants but are released externally. The name is derived from phérein = to carry and hormãn = to stimulate. In humans, they play an important role in the reproductive instinct; these are androstenone (sweaty odour of the male armpit), copulins (vaginal secretions) and trimethylamine (fish liquor). Some of these sexually stimulating "odour attractants" only have an effect on women, others only on men. In insects, pheromones trigger certain actions or social functions. For example, queen bees emit pheromones to the worker bees, which prevent them from rearing new...
