Aurore

The white grape variety is a complex, interspecific new breeding between Seibel 788 (Sicilien x Clairette Dorée Ganzin) x Seibel 29 (Munson x Vinifera). It was named after the Roman goddess of dawn. Synonyms are Aurora, Feri Szölö, Financ Szölö, Fruttato, Redei, S-5279, Seibel 13047 and Seibel 5279. Genes of Vitis aestivalis, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera are included. The hybrid was crossed by the breeder Albert Seibel (1844-1936). It was a crossing partner of the new varieties Reflex, Reform, Refrén and Tissier Ravat. There are three new crosses under the name Aurora.

Aurore - Weintraube und Blatt

The very early ripening, high-yielding variety is resistant to downy mildew, but susceptible to botrytis and black rot. It yields low-alcohol, high-acid white wines with a relatively neutral taste and, if necessary, a discreet foxtone. These are also suitable for sparkling wine production. The variety used to be widespread in France, but is no longer important there. In the USA, the variety is grown almost exclusively in the Finger Lakes in New York State on 255 hectares. There are also tiny populations in Kentucky and Switzerland (0.1 ha). In 2016, a total of 255 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
