The red grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Agustiatico, Avgoustella and Aygoustiates. The "August" in the name refers to the early ripeness. The ancestry (parentage) is unknown. There is no genetic relationship with the variety Goustolidi (with synonym Avgoustiatis), but a possible relationship with the variety Mavrodaphne. The medium maturing variety is susceptible to downy mildew and moderately susceptible to powdery mildew. It produces red wines with high acidity and mild tannins. The variety is cultivated on the Ionian Islands(Corfu), as well as on the Peloponnese and the Cyclades. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
