Aÿ

Most famous Grand Cru community in Champagne in the Vallée de la Marne sub-region (see also Échelle des crus). It is located on the right bank of the Marne, on the border of the municipality of Épernay. Henri IV (1553-1610) is said to have preferred the title "Lord of the vineyards of Aÿ" to all other titles to which he was entitled as King of France. The vineyards cover 350 hectares of vineyards on the north bank of the Marne. 80% of them are planted with the Pinot Noir variety, the rest with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. With the commune of Bouzy, Aÿ is considered one of the top Pinot Noir areas. Côte aux Enfants and Le Léon are considered the best sites. The commune is home to the renowned champagne houses Ayala, Billecart-Salmon, Bollinger, Deutz and Gosset, among others.
