Popular single-layer name in the German growing region Moselle Saar area (the name does not appear in the other growing areas). The name is derived from "Kuppe" (mountain or hill top).
A vineyard called Kupp was first documentarily mentioned in 1304 as the property of the Trier citizen Wilhelmus. At a wine auction in 1906, a “1904 Ayler Kupp” found the highest price ever paid on the Saar of 15,030 gold marks.
