The winery is located in the municipality of Dexheim ( Nierstein area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. After training as a viticultural technician, Hans Reinhard Berges expanded it to its current size. After studying viticulture and oenology in Geisenheim, his son Dirk joined the business. Attached are a guesthouse and a wine shop, which are run by his wife Marianne. The vineyards cover 13 hectares, mostly in the single vineyard Doktor (Dexheim), as well as Schloss (Dienheim), Schloss (Oppenheim) and Paterberg (Nierstein). Two thirds of the vineyards are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Morio-Muskat, Bacchus, Chardonnay, Silvaner, Scheurebe, Huxelrebe, Optima and Ortega, and one third with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, Dornfelder, Merlot and Portugieser. The first harvest always takes place in the second week of August and is only used to produce Federweißen from the Ortega variety. The product range includes red wines, rosé wines and white wines, which are matured in steel tanks, large wooden barrels or barriques, depending on the type of wine. In years with suitable weather conditions, Trockenbeerenauslese and ice wines are vinified. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines, sparkling wines, grape juices, noble brandies (grape, yeast, Marc) and liqueurs are also produced.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
