Baiken

single vineyard in the municipality of Rauenthal in the German wine-growing region of Rheingau. The name derives from the location in the bend of the Rauenthaler Berg towards the Sulzbach (from the Old High German bougen = to bend). It is the heart of the Rauenthaler Berg on the southern slope of the Taunus Mountains with the two other sites located here, Nonnenberg and Rothenberg. The vineyard, which faces south and turns slightly to the southwest, is 150 to 210 metres above sea level with a slope of up to 20% and covers 15 hectares of vineyards. The medium to deep, mostly lime-free soils consist of weathered slate (phyllite), quartzites and loess loam. The site benefits from an optimal exposure (sunlight) during the day with cooling fresh air from the nearby Taunus forests at night. There is also a good water supply through several water veins. The Riesling variety is mainly cultivated here. The Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern, Hessische Staatsweingüter, Laquai Paul and Schloss Schönborn wineries, for example, have shares in the site.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
