The wine-growing area in Hungary is located at the western end of the southern shore of Lake Balaton (Balaton). Until 1997 it was called Dél-Balaton. The vineyards on sandy loess soil cover 2,900 hectares of vineyard area. Mainly white wines are produced here. The most important white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Olaszrizling(Welschriesling), Ottonel Muskotály(Muscat Ottonel) and Sémillon, the most important red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), Királyleányka, Merlot and Kék Burgundi(Pinot Noir) Well-known producers are Balatonboglári Borgazdaság, Garamvári Vencel, Konyári János and Légli Ottó.
