The wine region is on the north bank of the Balaton (Lake Balaton) between Badacsony and Balatonfüred-Csopak in Hungary, It is divided into the three districts of Káli, Balatonederics-lesencei and Cserszegi. Until 1997 it was called Balaton-Mellék, the current name means "Balaton-Hochland". It is a little further away from the lake, but it still has a positive influence. The vineyards cover around 1,350 hectares of vines on chalky, volcanic soil mixed with brown forest soil at 100 to 200 meters above sea level. It is sub-Mediterranean climate in front. White wines are mainly produced here. Because of the cold air flowing down from the mountains at night, they have a good quality acidity and high alcohol content, The main types of white wine are Chardonnay, Olaszrizling ( Riesling ), Rizlingszilváni ( Müller-Thurgau ), Szürkebarat ( Pinot gris ) Furmint and Zöld Veltelini ( Green Valtellina ). The main red wines are Kék Burgundi ( Pinot Noir ) and Zweigelt, Well-known producers are Fodorvin Családi Pincészet, Lesence and Tóth Sándor.
