The red grape variety originates from Algeria. The exact origin and parentage is unknown. The vine has blue-red berries and is one of the most successful table grapes. It is cultivated in Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand and in large quantities especially in South Africa, where it was introduced by the wine pioneer Professor Abraham Isak Perold (1880-1941). In Europe, it is marketed in the spring months. It is also used as a wine grape. However, no stocks were recorded in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
