The traditional winery (formerly Freiherrlich Langwerth von Simmern'sches Rentamt) is located in Eltville in the German wine-growing region of Rheingau. The history of the Barons Langwerth von Simmern dates back to 1464, when Johann Langwerth von Simmern was enfeoffed with 32 and 2/3 acres of "Hattenheimer Mannberg" for his services as chancellor to Duke Ludwig von Pfalz-Zweibrücken. The family then moved to Eltville in 1711. The purchase of the Lichtenstern farm in 1753 laid the foundation. Today's owner is Georg R. Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern. The vineyards cover 30 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyard sites Baiken and Rothenberg (Rauenthal), Marcobrunn (Erbach), Mannberg, Nussbrunnen and Wisselbrunnen (Hattenheim), Sandgrub (Kiedrich), as well as Rheinberg and Sonnenberg (Eltville). Most of them are planted with Riesling (25 ha), the rest with Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Rieslings are vinified exclusively in steel tanks. Brandy and bottle-fermented sparkling wine are also produced. The winery is a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
