The winery is located on the outskirts of Offenburg (Ortenau area) in the German wine-growing region of Baden. The history goes back to the 13th century to the then owners, the Knights of Bach. The oldest records of viticulture date back to 1517. Through marriage, the vineyards came into the possession of the eponymous noble family, the Barons von und zu Franckenstein from Ullstadt, in 1710. From 1985 to 2007, the vineyard was leased to Hubert Doll. After studies in Geisenheim and an internship in New Zealand at the "Johner Estate" with Karl-Heinz Johner, the business was taken over by Stefan Huschle in 2008. The vineyards comprise 17.5 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Schützenberg in sole ownership (Berghaupten), Abtsberg and in sole ownership Neugesetz (Zell-Weierbach), and also in sole ownership Gut Alsenhof (Lauf). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Traminer, as well as Pinot Noir.
According to the philosophy of the farm, all viticultural and cellar management measures are limited to the most necessary according to non-invasive rules (as much as necessary, as little as possible). Environmentally friendly viticulture is practised and the necessary plant protection is reduced to a minimum. The wines are vinified according to the terroir . The red wines are traditionally matured in large wooden bar rels and partly in barriques. The white wines are matured in stainless steel tanks or in large wooden barrels after a controlled fermentation period of up to eight weeks. The top wines from the best parcels are marketed as Grosses Gewächs. The winery is a member of the Generation Riesling Association and has been a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) since 1992.
