Barsaglina

The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Barsullina, Bersaglina, Massareta and Massaretta. The parentage is unknown. There are morphological similarities with the Sangiovese variety. The medium-late ripening vine is sensitive to powdery mildew. It yields ruby red wines with high tannin and alcohol content and fruity aromas, mainly for blending. The variety is mainly grown in Tuscany in the province of Massa-Carrara, where it is permitted in the DOC wines Candia dei Colli Apuani and Colli di Luni. There is a small stand under the name Massaretta in Liguria. In 2016, 9 hectares of vines were reported with a decreasing trend (Kym Anderson).
