Bekari

The red grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Bekaro, Dimrit, Mbekari Mavro, Mpekari Mavro, Mbekaro and Mpekaro. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2018, it is identical to the Turkish variety Dimrit. The medium-maturing vine is generally quite resistant to vine diseases. It yields red wines with moderate colour, alcohol and acidity. The variety is cultivated in the Greek region of Epirus. Traditionally, it is blended with Debina and Vlachiko for the production of rosé sparkling wines, and with Agiorgitiko and Vlachiko for red wine cuvées. However, no stocks were reported in Greece in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
