Benegas Tiburcio

Don Tiburcio Benegas (1844-1910) is regarded as a decisive initiator and winegrowing pioneer in Argentina. In 1861 the old colonial city of Mendoza was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake. Benegas became the city's banker and sorted out the chaotic finances caused by the catastrophe. In 1870, he married Lubina Blanco and that was the beginning of his interest in viticulture. His father-in-law, Don Eusebios Blanco, was a landowner and in 1872 he had written the book "Las viñas y los vinos de Mendoza", the first fundamental work on Argentine viticulture. Benegas gave up his banking career and in 1883 bought a small plot of land in the neighbouring province of Godoy Cruz (now the province of San Vincente) and called it "El Trapiche".

He dedicated himself to the development and perfection of new grape varieties and became a pioneer in the production of quality wines. With great commitment he promoted the naturalization of qualified workers and the import of French grape varieties and state-of-the-art technology. In 1886 he became Governor of the Province of Mendoza and was a strong driving force behind Argentine viticulture. His son Pedro Benegas successfully continued the work, trained with French experts and was inspired by Bordeaux wines. Thus wines were created according to the best European standards. In the year 1973 Trapiche taken over from Multi Peñaflor.
