Berbecel

The white grape variety originates from Bulgaria or Romania. There are around 80 synonyms, which indicates a great age and formerly wide distribution. Some of them are Abuc, Alb Marunt, Aprofehér, Aurelul, Bálint, Belina Sitia, Berbecal, Berbetsel, Budai Rizling (Budai Riesling), Cokour, Eder Popolek, Fehér Kadarka, Kisfehér, Kleinweiß, Marunt Prajit, Momina Salza, Popolec, Ptitse Grozne and Taouchan. The ancestry (parentage) is unknown. There are morphological similarities with the Romanian varieties Cabasma Albă, Galbenă de Odobești and Zghihară de Husi. A direct descendant is the Hungarian variety Kövidinka Fehér. Under the name Kleinweiß, the variety used to be quite common in Upper Franconia (Germany). According to the graduate biologist Andreas Jung, with its milky white-yellow berries it resembles the Gelber Riesling in the collection of the winegrower Franz Leth (Wagram, Lower Austria). The variety can still be found ungrafted in the Gemischter Satz of winemaker Peter Götz in the Zeller Schlossberg (Zell am Ebersberg) in Franconia and in the Museumswengert of Kernen-Stetten in Württemberg. However, the variety is no longer important; no stock was reported in 2016 (statistics Kym Anderson).
