The winery is located in the municipality of Borgonato di Cortefranca (province of Brescia) in the Italian region of Lombardy. It was founded in 1955 by Guido Berlucchi, Franco Ziliani and Giorgio Lanciani. Today it is managed by Pia Donata Berlucchi. At the beginning of the 1960s, Franco Ziliani, the then already legendary cellar master, began to produce sparkling wine with bottle fermentation according to the Metodo classico. His ambitious goal was to produce an exceptional sparkling wine that could compete with even the best champagne. The young oenologist had learned the craft at the famous champagne house Moët et Chandon. Already in 1975 the cuvée "Imperiale Berlucchi" was the most sold "Champagne of Italy". This led to many imitators in the region and finally to the Spumante Franciacorta being classified as DOCG in 1995. The vineyards cover about 70 hectares of vines. With around 400,000 cases of Franciacorta per year, Berlucchi is one of the largest Italian producers of bottle-fermented sparkling wine. It also produces a red wine DOC Curtefranca (formerly Terre di Franciacorta) and a grappa.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
