The constitutional monarchy of Bhutan (Bhutanese འབྲུག་ཡུལ, German Druk Yul = Land of the Thunder Dragon) in South Asia on the edge of the tropics with the capital Thimphu covers 38,394 km². The majority of the country lies at high altitude in the Himalayas. It lies to the east of Nepal between China and India. Viticulture hardly plays a role, but wine is increasingly being imported. Beers from India and locally produced spirits such as gin, rum and whisky are consumed above all. Local specialities include the national drink "Marchang" (a mixture of rice wine and butter) and the sweet peach wine ZumZin.

In the early 1990s, a vineyard was planted here at Paro near Thimphu at 2,300 metres above sea level with the support of the Australian company Taltarni, making it one of the highest vineyards in the world. It is planted with the white wine varieties Altesse, Chardonnay, Mondeuse Blanche, Pinot Blanc and Riesling, as well as the red wine varieties Gamay and Pinot Noir.
