Bianca (grape variety)

The white grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Eger 2 (Villard Blanc) x Bouvier. Synonyms are Bianka, EC 40, ECS 40, Egri Csillagok 40 and May Rot. Genes of Vitis berlandieri, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera are included. The hybrid was crossed in Hungary in 1963 by the breeders Jozsef Csizmazia and Laszlo Bereznai. Plant variety protection was granted in 1978. The variety was a crossing partner of the new varieties Backa, Cabernet Volos, Jázmin, Rubinka, Sauvignon Nepis and Sauvignon Rytos. The early-maturing, high-yielding, frost-hardy vine is generally well resistant to fungal diseases. It yields flowery, neutral white wines with moderate alcohol content. The variety is widely scattered in Hungary, but mainly grown in the Kunság area and occupies a total of 4,898 hectares of vineyards. There are other stocks in Russia (1,513 ha), Moldova (1,340 ha), Romania (13 ha) and Switzerland (2 ha). The variety occupied a total of 9,766 hectares of vineyard in 2016, with an upward trend. It is thus ranked 72nd in the global grape variety ranking (Kym Anderson).
