The winery is located in the municipality of Deidesheim (Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area) in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. It was founded in 1879 by Adam Biffar. In 2012, there was a change of ownership. The winery, now called "Weingut Josef Biffar GmbH", is run by Fumiko Tokuoka as managing director (the Japanese owner family Tokuoka ran the Reichsrat von Buhl winery between 1989 and 2013). Michael Leibrecht is responsible as cellar master. In the nearby sparkling wine cellar "J. Biffar Wein & Sekt GmbH" Im Kathrinenbild, Palatinate sparkling wines are produced in traditional bottle fermentation. The Japanese restaurant "fumi", which is dedicated to traditional kappo cuisine (a way of dining where guests order directly from the chef, who cooks only a short distance away), also moved in there.

The vineyards cover 7.3 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Herrgottsacker, Kieselberg and Leinhöhle (Deidesheim), Pechstein and Ungeheuer (Forst), as well as Luginsland (Wachenheim). They are 95% planted with Riesling, the rest with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyards are cultivated consistently according to the environmentally friendly guidelines of organic viticulture. The quality criteria of the house are extremely low yields, manual grape selection, gentle pressing, as well as longer fermentation times at controlled low temperatures. Depending on the desired wine type, the wines are matured in stainless steel or in barriques according to the location or terroir.
