Big Six

Formerly common name in South Africa for the most important six grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. In the mid-1990s, they occupied only 15% of the vineyard area, but almost exclusively supplied the share of quality wines. Today, however, they already occupy around 50% of the vineyard area.
