Term (bios = life, caedere = to kill) for active substances, chemicals and microorganisms used in non-agricultural pest control against harmful organisms (such as rats, insects, fungi, microbes), e.g. disinfectants, rat poisons or wood preservatives. In contrast, products used in the cultivation of plants, i.e. also in viticulture, are not referred to as biocides (although this often occurs), but as plant protection products. Biocides are also called "non-agricultural pesticides". See under pesticides, and for pest control under organic viticulture. See also under vine enemies.
