Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle

DOC area for white wine in the Italian region of Valle d'Aosta. It is a subzone of the Valle d'Aosta DOC area. The terraced vineyards with only 15 hectares of vineyards are located at 900 to 1,200 meters above sea level on the left and right of the Dora Baltea shore in the name-giving municipalities of Morgex and La Salle in the face of Mont Blanc. They are thus among the highest vineyards in Europe. In the mid-20th century, these vineyards were to be abandoned, but the Abbé Alexandre Bougeat (1916-1972) launched a successful initiative to save this area. The exposed location earned the wine the nickname "Bianco dei ghiacciai" (White Glacier Wine). It is made from the autochthonous Prié (Blanc) grape variety, ungrafted (Blanc de Morgex), which is grown here on low pergolas. The racy, effervescent wine has an aroma of citrus and mountain herbs. There is also a spumante in extra brut, brut and demi-sec flavors. Well-known producers are Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, Brunet, Celegato, Pavese, A. Vevey A. and M. Vevey.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
