Blandy's

The important Portuguese Madeira house Blandy's Madeira was founded in 1811 by the Englishman John Blandy from Dorset. He became acquainted with the island of Madeira as early as 1807, when he was posted on a ship in the army of the English general Sir William Beresford (1768-1854) to defend against a possible attack by Napoleon. It was at this time that the dessert wine trade, which was just blossoming, caught his interest. After his army service, he returned to the island and settled there. Subsequently, the family acquired extensive estates. The success of the business, now known as Blandy Brothers & Co, began in 1852 when son Charles Ridpath Blandy bought up large quantities of mature Madeira. His daughter married a Cossart of the Cossart Gordon wine company in 1874.

In 1925, a majority shareholding in the Madeira Wine Company followed. The port wine house Symington joined as the second owner in 1988. Blandy and Symington are thus by far the largest Madeira house with numerous Madeira brands (companies). The company does not own its own vineyards, but buys grapes from grape growers. The most important four brands are Blandy, Cossart Gordon, Leacock and Miles. Of these four former founding or owning families, only Blandys are active in the company today. Besides wine production and trade, "Blandy Group" is also active in hotel investments, leisure and travel and media in Portugal, the Canary Islands and the UK.
