Blattner Valentin

The vineyard owner Valentin Blattner from Soyhières in the canton of Jura(Switzerland) has been quite extensively active as a private breeder since the 1980s. The crossings were carried out on his farm, the subsequent selection and rearing partly in the Freytag nursery in Neustadt/Lachen-Speyerdorf in the Palatinate(Germany). Great importance was attached to resistance to frost and fungal diseases, therefore mostly varieties of the species Vitis amurensis or with gene shares of it were involved. These are therefore mostly PIWI varieties. Unusually, however, the breeder does not name both parents, but only prominent varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, which is often involved. Blattner created the new varieties Birstaler Muskat, Blattner grape varieties (many different ones with "Blattner Cal" and consecutive number), Cabaret Noir, Cabernet Blanc, Cabernet Colonjes, Cabernet Early, Cabernet Foch, Cabernet Jura, Cabertin, Millot-Foch, Petite Milo, Pinotin, Réselle, Riesel, Satin Noir, Sauvignac and VB 32-7. Some of these varieties are cultivated in Belgium, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Austria and especially in Switzerland.
