In German-speaking countries such as Austria, Germany and Switzerland, a frequent component in the name of red wine varieties; for example, Blauer Portugieser, Blauer Burgunder (Pinot Noir), Blauer Wildbacher and Blaufränkisch. The attribute "blue" or bleu (French), nera (Italian), blue (English) and kék (Hungarian) is also used to describe the colour of the berries. The dark pigments of the grapes, to which red wine owes its colour, are mainly due to the anthocyanins contained in the skins. The term "black" also corresponds to the attribute "blue". The colour palette of these grape varieties ranges from blue or sometimes violet and dark blue to deep black. The attribute "red", on the other hand, as in the case of the varieties Roter Veltliner or Roter Traminer, indicates pale red to red grapes that produce a light-coloured (white, yellow, greenish) or at most light-red white wine. See also under colour, and red, black and white.
